The woman says that although she’s 47 years old, she must climb onto the roof every day to try to stop the rain from leaking down. However, covering the roof with materials at hand doesn’t seem to work anymore. The rain constantly drips from the ceiling. When the heater is on, the damp smell becomes intolerable.

A few days ago, Hripsimeh and her son Artur, two months shy of his second birthday, were rescued by their neighbors. She was hanging the laundry on the balcony, when apart of the floor crushed, and they fell off, clutching the banister. Luckily, the neighbors heard her scream and came to their rescue.

We descend from the dilapidated wall and he tells me – let’s go and ask my grandpa. The door to the security post opens without a screech. “Grandpa, hey grandpa, when’s my birthday?” asks David. “Hey boy, don’t you know?” is the response of the old man, his eyebrows scrunching and the lines on his forehead multiplying.

The village was freezing but Samvel only wore a thin jacket. He said he was used to it. Samvel has no permanent job and sustains the family by gathering what he can from the local forest. “If it wasn’t for the forest, I don’t know what would become of us,” he says. Chickens run to and fro as we enter the yard of the house.

There are ten families living in the hotel in the town of Berd in the Tavush Marz, five of them refugee families from various regions of Azerbaijan. There is a rumor going around Berd that the hotel has been privatized, which has spread panic among its residents. The fate of these ten families is uncertain.

In the Tavush Marz, in the center of the town of Berd, one of the stores has a sign on the wall that says "Xerox copies". I went in to make a copy of a document that a resident of Berd had received from the local administration.
